Two Sentry Boxes
Rottal Palace, a monument protected as national heritage, is located in Vienna’s first district, at the crossroads of Singerstraße and Grünangergasse. Today the building houses the Austrian Ombudsman Board, the Statutory Law Office and Legal Advisory Board of the Republic of Austria, as well as an art gallery called artmark galerie. In front of the opulent Baroque façade there are two sentry (guard) boxes.
In these alcoves, which normally remain unused, innumerable pedestrians, groups of idly strolling tourists, busy passers-by, and school classes are currently being confronted with temporary interventions by Guido Kucsko. These charming relics from a past epoch have been inscribed with questions of timeless relevance that are related to the essential purpose and nature of these boxes, and which do not so much wait to be answered than maintain their mysteriousness.
Some people will be accompanied by these questions only for a short while as they continue on their way, others will take these unexpected phrases with them in the form of documented memories: motifs of snapshots or selfies, the white letters on black ground are being photographed daily dozens of times—probably a strategy to deal with this encounter without having to deal with it any further?
The text installation ‘Two Sentry Boxes’ poses questions related to such issues as ‘observation’, ‘surveillance’, and ‘control’, both internally and externally.

Zwei Wächterhäuschen
Im 1. Wiener Gemeindebezirk an der Kreuzung Singerstraße/Grünanger- gasse steht das denkmalgeschützte Palais Rottal. Heute sind dort die Österreichische Volksanwaltschaft, die Finanzprokuratur und die artmark galerie untergebracht. An der opulent barocken Fassade befinden sich zwei Wächter- (Schilder-)Häuschen.
Den ungezählten Passanten, flanierenden Touristengruppen, eilenden Geschäftigen und Schulklassen begegnen in diesen üblicherweise ungenutzten Nischen temporäre Interventionen von Guido Kucsko. Den charmanten Relikten aus einer anderen Zeit werden in Bezug zu ihrer Wesensgründung zeitlos aktuelle Fragen eingeschrieben, die weniger einer Beantwortung harren, denn ihre Rätselhaftigkeit behaupten.
Manche werden die Fragestellungen nur einige Schritte lang begleiten, andere nehmen die unerwarteten Schriftzüge mit in ihre dokumentierten Erinnerungen: Als Foto- und Selfie-Motiv werden die weißen Lettern
auf schwarzem Grund täglich dutzendfach abgelichtet – vielleicht eine Strategie, diese Begegnung behandelt zu haben, ohne sie weiter behandeln zu müssen?
Die Textinstallation „Zwei Wächterhäuschen“ stellt Fragen nach dem „Bewachen“ und „Überwachen“, im Inneren und Äußeren.
